• Players were welcomed to Econo Lodge Hotel, 2133 Hanford Road, Burlington, NC by a nice office desktop display announcing "Welcome !  2014  11-Man National Open Checker Tournament"

• Congratulations! To World Champion GM Alex Moiseyev of Dublin, Ohio who won the 2014 11-Man National Tournament.  GM Alex Moiseyev won the title in 2008 and has defended his title four times since then form National winners or runner-up challengers. 

• Congratulations! To IM Tim Laverty of Graham, North Carolina was our 2014 2nd Place 11-Man Ballot National Champion, and earned the privilege to challenge the Champ to a WTM.  Laverty won his position over a tie on game points with Joe Moore of Levittown, PA but earned more honor points for his 2nd Place Finish. 

• Congratulations! To Glenn Fuquay of Elon, North Carolina who won our Majors Division, and the new 2014  11-Man Ballot Majors National Champion. When you win a divisional title you must move up to the next level for the next 3 years. 

• JR Smith, tournament director, welcomed 11 Masters and 4 Majors players to the 2014 11-Man National Checker Tournament.  He thanked the out of town players and several 1^st timers to play in North Carolina.  He asked Ted Williamson to open our National Tournament with invocation and follow with discussion on schedule and rules, which we agreed to start tournament play at 10:00am (1 hr weather delay) to accommodate drive-in player who encountered bad weather secondary roads.  We voted to cut the tournament to 8 rounds instead of 9 as: 3 Friday + 3 Saturday + 2 Sunday rounds over the three days due to super bowel weekend, weather, and more traveling time for Sunday departure.   We had 15 players from 8 states:  7 from NC, 2 from KY, and one each from IN, LA, OH, PA, SC, and WV.  

• We discussed and voted to play a single group of Swiss with a Majors' bracket to recognize a Majors 11- Man Champion as well as our Masters 11-Man Champion.  The Single Division would play 8 rounds as outlined in the tournament announcement as 3 hours per round. Tim Laverty, tournament referee & score-keeper explained the playing rules including the Swiss pairing and only repairing when necessary in the final round.

• We ask players to record their games on provided recorder game-sheets. We started playing at 10:00am Friday,  and would start Saturday and Sunday at 9:00am.  11-Man decks with instruction card were distributed to players who needed them.

• Two 11-Man Ballot National Tournament topics were discussed and voted on: 1st we decided the winner or runner-up to the champion of a 11-Man National could challenge the World Champion for a WTM on a yearly cycle instead of a 2 year cycle.  2nd decision, we added the playing rule that the opponent who rejected the opening could request the opponent who wants to play it, to play the weak side.  It was predetermined if a player continually abused this rule then the referee would decide if the ballot was playable. All initial man-down openings shall be rejected and a re-drawn ballot selected.  These man-down openings should be removed from any automate 11-Man move generator as the move instructions of a balloted off piece to be moved must be the piece behind it in the same direction has been simplified.  You may read more details about this 11-Man Deck & System and the 11-Man Deck.

• JR Smith stated we might not continue scheduling an 11-Man National annually since attendance was not meeting expatiations.  Over 350 invitations were mailed out with only 15 entrants this year was disappointing.  John Webster suggested  we should include 2-Move in the variation mix so we could play all 4 type of openings which might increase interest and attendance.

• Time was given to our 3-Move National Director, Michael Holmes to explain the bid and venue just published in the ACF Jan/Feb 2014 Bulletin.  Michael explained the reason he choose Louisville, KY was because of a substantial contribution.  The tournament playing room and starting times were dictated by the owner of Bluegrassmagic Gameshop. Wednesday through Sunday (12:00am - 9:00pm) was their business hours. The Louisville Youth Checker Club also use this location, and their National is also scheduled to be held there.  This should increase and promote checkers in the Louisville Metro by bring GrandMasters and Masters exposure to their local club and introduce a professional level of skill that a National commands.  The youth players in the club and the public will benefit from this event by increasing checker awareness.  Michael covered the details of how a player should vote and mail in his ballot to determine the number of games per round and how many rounds in the division they plan to play at National.  Also if they wanted to pay $50 per day to start at 10:00am. Basically you are voting on scoring by game or ballot as 4 game round, or play 2 game rounds.  Either way we must fit the number of rounds per day or number of games to fit our 5 days venue facility. There seems to be a push to play 2 games per round scored by game, allowing a player more rounds so you get to play more opponents.  Traditionally Masters played 4 games per round, 2 hrs per gm or 8 hrs per round in 3-Move Nationals.

• Jim Morrison also spoke that he will bid for the 2015 GAYP National to be held in memory of Grandmaster Don Lafferty and near his hometown Eastview, KY which possibly will be held in Cave City, Kentucky and also close to Glasgow.  Jim talked about Lafferty's checker career and his accomplishments in checkers as a Grandmaster in both 3-Move and GAYP.  Jim said, Marion Tinsley said, "Don Lafferty was the best or he considered him the best opponent he ever played, considering the many games they played and all the talented Grandmaster Tinsley played throughout his checker career!" Tinsley and Lafferty were close friends, they studied and practiced checkers together for over twenty years.

• Glenn Fuquay led the Majors “B Class” from start to finish with him winning the bracket with 15 games points.

• We recognized Alex Holmes as the youngest player who was 15 on February 28^th, Grover Minor as the oldest at 82 on July 14^th, and Albert Tucker as traveling the longest distance as 1,025 miles from Minden, Louisiana.

• We appreciate Mike Ross who brought his honey for sale and a basket of frozen muscadines & scuppernongs for the player to enjoy.

• Mrs. Carolyn Minor made two delicious Key Lime Pies with Meringue Topping for the players to enjoy Saturday, and Grover Minor's wife Carolyn, daughter Tammy,  and grandkids also visited the tournament.

• Gayle Smith invited the wives to a shopping tour of the Burlington Outlet stores, and made a grape dessert salad for Saturday.

• We appreciate Alan Millhone who ReadyPost mailed game recording sheets and ACF membership cards to the tournament.  We collected two ACF membership fees.

• Tim Laverty decided to exercise his privilege at the conclusion of the tournament to challenge for a WTM by filing his bid to challenge for the 11-Man WTM against GM Moiseyev with the ACF 11-Man Ballot National committee.

• GM stands for Grand Master, IM for International Master, and CM for Candidate Master, which are earned titles given to distinguish players by WCDF.

• ACF Ratings - updated immediately,  ratings supplied by ICH Checkers www.icheckers.net  Program written by Vadim Khavinson, and ACF ratings processed by Joe Moore.

• "/" separates player's game points for that round from his accumulated game points. Win is 2 points, Draw is 1, Bye is 3, and a Forfeit is 4.

• A group of players enjoyed daily lunch at K&W Cafeteria during the tournament.  Sunday afternoon following the close of the tournament, Tim Laverty invited everyone to accompany him to Harbor Inn Seafood Restaurant, a popular eatery for an excellent meal, fellowship, and a fitting tournament conclusion.

• We appreciate Tim Laverty as our official referee and scorekeeper, and also appreciate Econo Lodge Hotel, our venue for keeping coffee available and providing us an adequate playing room.

• We will submitted all recorded games to Jim Loy so he can review, correct, verify, and annotate them for publication.

• We appreciate the donations and contributions which totaled $1,260.00.  This and the $450 entry fees collected made $1,710.00  less expenses = 1,235.00 total cash prize.

• Glenn Fuquay & Tim Laverty were written up inTimes-News Burlington on February 28, a regional newspaper.

• All players received a nice deck of laminated 11-Man Ballot Cards. 

• A delightful tournament & wonderful fellowship was had by all who attended!
